“We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to visit Derrick Corporation’s state-of-the-art facility while evaluating Stack Sizers for our South African mineral sand operation. From the moment we arrived, it was evident that Derrick is dedicated to producing top-quality products. All components are fabricated in-house using advanced CNC machines, stick and robot welders, and automated precision laser-cutting machines in a climate-controlled environment. The facility also strictly follows safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment and a 5S system.

The facility itself was impressive—it is impeccably clean, and the extra care taken, the quality control checklist followed at each stage, and the use of automation and computerization helped to minimize waste and improve efficiency. Additionally, the in-house blast and paint shop, featuring a vacuum system to reduce overspray and excess fumes, ensures that each product is coated to the customer’s specifications.

Managing Director Africa – Mining & Industrial
Mr. Barkhuysen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Extractive Metallurgy from University of Johannesburg and an MDP in Business Administration from The University of Natal’s Business School.
Nic brings 35 years’ experience and leadership to the Derrick M&I team. He served as a consultant, developing markets for the company in Africa, SE Asia, and Australasia before being appointed VP of Africa in 2014 and subsequently MD of Africa in early 2021. Prior to joining the Derrick team, he spent 18 years in the Mineral Sands Industry in various technical, consulting and management capacities. During that time, he spent 13 years with Rio Tinto, with his last position as Metallurgical Superintendent, RBM, managing five metallurgical operations, followed by 5 years with Spectrum Technical as Managing Director, serving the local metallurgical industry with equipment and advice.

Mr. Jean Makola holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Vaal University of Technology and honors in Technology and Innovation Management from the University of Pretoria.
Jean brings to Derrick more than thirteen years of experience in mineral processing. Today Jean is focused on providing innovative and industry-leading solutions to Africa’s mining and industrial markets. Prior to joining Derrick, Jean held various metallurgical and management positions at Anglo Platinum and Spectrum Technical.
